Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental issues we treat. If you are like most people, chances are you will have at least one cavity in your lifetime. Getting a cavity filled is a simple procedure that involves drilling away the decayed portion of the tooth, then filling the spot with a material that will keep decay from spreading.

You may not always know you have a cavity until it gets big enough to cause you discomfort. This is just one of the reasons regular visits to the dentist are so important. With digital x-rays, your dentist can spot even the tiniest bit of decay.

If you don’t treat a cavity, it will continue to get worse. In some cases, bacteria will seep into the tooth root, causing an infection in the canal of the tooth. At this point, only a root canal will save your tooth. You’ll probably need a dental crown as well.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

In years past, if you had a cavity, your only option for filling it was an amalgam filling. These grey-coloured restorations were effective at stopping the spread of tooth decay, but they were not very attractive. Now we can use a composite resin material that we can match to the colour of the tooth it is restoring. You can open your mouth and laugh as heartily as you’d like—and no one will be able to tell you have a filling.

This same material is also used to make cosmetic repairs to teeth. If you have teeth that are gapped, chipped or cracked, cosmetic bonding with composite material makes repairs that blend in seamlessly with the rest of your teeth.

Tooth-coloured fillings do not change colour over the years. Strong and durable, they retain their aesthetic look for many years. Like many of our patients, you might even opt to replace any old amalgam fillings with tooth-coloured fillings.

Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding is a great way to conceal tooth flaws—usually in just one dental appointment. Using the composite material we use for tooth-coloured fillings, we can use dental bonding for a number of different issues with your smile:

  • Repairing a chip in your tooth
  • Concealing a stain that is resistant to teeth whitening
  • Changing the shape of teeth that appear uneven
  • Filling in gaps between teeth
